The Hadley Garden Center opened in March of 1963 on a quiet Route
9 (one of a handful of businesses back then). Ed Machno and his wife
Fran had a 30' x 40' building constructed for their seasonal Garden
Shop. Then open March through October (closed weekends during July
and August) their store became a destination for amateur and experienced
gardeners in the Pioneer Valley. The Machno's built their business
on service and knowledge -- always helping their customers find the
plants, tools, and information they needed to maintain their landscapes
and create new ones.
Even after selling the business to a long-term employee,
Tom Giles, Ed Machno's love for his customers kept him coming back
to help. Giles took over operations in 1988, but had been a part
of the Hadley Garden Center family since a year after graduating
from the University of Massachusetts Stockbridge School in 1973.
Tom met his wife, Janine, when she came to work at the garden center
and the two have since worked together to help carry out the Machno's
original vision.
Several veteran employees have been here since Machno
owned Hadley Garden Center and they've been a huge part of what we
are today.
- Clivia has been buying and caring for perennials for
26 years.
- Dan, the nursery manager and Dianne, a customer
service veteran, have both been here for more than 21 years.
- Barb's been
keeping the shelves stocked and organized for 12 years.
- Angela has 7 years of plant care and customer service
as her specialty, and
- Eric is our rookie with almost 3 years in the nursery
yard!
We've all been together for
so long that Hadley Garden Center truly is our second family!
With all that experience we know we have the answers
to all your gardening questions and we can help you find exactly
what you are searching for!
Hadley Garden Center is open all year. Our busiest
season kicks off in March with the arrival of our nursery stock.
Fall brings in the cooler temperatures for fall planting and the
arrival of our huge selection of spring flowering bulbs. November
and December are filled with helping customers find the perfect
holiday decorations and creating beautiful wreaths or swags, as
well as finding the perfect gifts for gardeners and non-gardeners
alike.
But in between the busy spells we're all still
here taking care of nursery stock and houseplants, selling bird
feeders and food, and making sure we're ready for the next season.
And as we've done since 1963, we're answering our busy telephone
to solve the next plant or lawn problem for the many Western Massachusetts
gardeners who have come to depend on our advice.
We hope you'll
stop in to see us soon. |
