Seasonal Bulbs, Plants, and Seeds

Even though February is the shortest month on the calendar, in New England it can feel like the longest. About this time of year we start to dread the snow and cold and get anxious for spring. At the Hadley Garden Center we can help relieve your winter blues and give your spring gardening plans a jump start.

Come out of the cold and take a walk through our warm greenhouse. Angela has new plants coming in weekly. Blooming primrose and cyclamen can add a splash of color to your home and are easy to care for. New orders of cactus, succulents, and bonsai are in. We?re also bringing in Hawaiian Volcano Plants to add texture, color, and a bit of the unusual to your houseplant collections. These plants are grown on volcanic cinder which holds moisture around the roots like a sponge. Twelve assorted varieties of these distinct and easy to grow plants are available.

Our seed racks are overflowing with an abundance of choices for your gardens. All of the 2009 seeds are in from Johnny's, Renee's, Seeds of Change (organic), Burpee's, Livingston's, Botanical Interests (many organic) Olds Seeds (New organic line), Hart's, Plants of Distinction, New England Seed Company, High Mowing (organic), and Cook's Garden. In addition to the all the seed varieties you would expect we have some unusual offerings like white and gold beets, lemongrass, cardoon, stevia, pitcher plants, epazote, soybeans, artichokes, asparagus, jack in the pulpit, and even something called pumpkin on a stick!

Our staff can help you with all your seed starting needs.

We have a free seed starting guideline sheet for you and carry all of the supplies you need!

Some of the more dramatic plants we see blooming in the summer start out in late winter/early spring as bulbs. We have many extraordinary varieties of summer bulbs arriving between now and early March.

Tuberous begonias are started indoors in late winter and provide colorful flowers for your shade gardens all summer long. Dahlias, lilies, gladiolas, cannas, and calla lilies as well as specialty bulbs like liatris, agapanthus, freesias, anemone, and foxtail lilies add color, scent, and variety to your annual and perennial gardens or borders.

We carry a wide variety of the traditional annual garden staples and an incredible array of vibrant, exciting tropicals and temperennials to make your garden a show stopper.

Roses: At last count we had over 100 varieties of roses in our nursery yard. Our roses are chosen for their hardiness and disease resistance and each year we try to bring in new and exciting varieties. Check out this years selection. Please download our Rose List 2010 (pdf) and remember ... all roses mentioned are not always available.

The Garden Within

At the Hadley Garden Center, we're delighted when one of our longtime yard customers comes up to the counter with an arm around a potted tropical plant and says, "I didn't know you have a greenhouse!"

Did you know? Just a few steps off the side room, through the arbor, and you're at the entry to the greenhouse, the murmur of the water garden in the air and hundreds of plants before you, neatly arrayed on broad tables.

The stalwarts of indoor plant design -- Philodendron, Dracaena, Jade -- are mixed with the more sensational -- Rex begonia, Aralia, Bonsai, Anthurium. Whimsical dish gardens, nestle birds and butterflies among blossom and leaf, and are bestsellers. We take care of orchid fanciers with the largest collection of any garden center in the Pioneer Valley, from the long-flowering and virtually carefree Phalenopsis to the uncommon Paphiopedilum. You'll also find a good selection of ferns, cacti and other succulents. And every season brings its abundance to the tabletop: Sweet Hyacinth, Aromatic Herbs, Cycalmen, Primrose, Poinsettias and more.

As you might expect from us, our plants are labeled extensively regarding their maintenance needs and questions are invited -- Angela loves to share her more than 30 years' experience with houseplants. She and the rest of our talented staff can help you choose plants that suit your passion for texture, color, frangrence, or shape and suit your maintenance habits and the type of space you have. Along the wall are sacks of potting soils, orchid bark, and bonsai soil as well as pots, pots, and more pots! Have a plant ready for a new home? Bring it in, and we'll repot it for a small fee.

Some customers are in the greenhouse every Sunday, and others include the greenhouse whenever they visit. Other customers, such as the proprietors of many restaurants, shops, and offices in the Valley, come regularly for consultation on plant selections. Still other customers visit us several times before they notice the arbored entry to ... the garden within the Hadley Garden Center.
